The band began playing together in 2002 while all four members were attending Wilmslow High School, located in Wilmslow, Cheshire, England.

They released their self-titled debut album in 2013. Their sophomore effort, I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful yet So Unaware of It, hit streets in 2016.

The band went through many names before selecting “The 1975.” Their sobriquet comes from a date written on the back of a book of Jack Kerouac poetry, “1 June, The 1975.”
