The musical’s story explains the origins of The Wicked Witch of the East, the Good Witch, The Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Woodman, and the ruby slippers.
The musical is based on a novel by Gregory Maguire. The lyrics and music were written by Stephen Schwartz while the book was written by Winnie Holzman.
The original cast starred legends Idina Menzel (Elphaba), Kristin Chenoweth (Glinda), and Joel Grey (The Wizard). The score is known for the song, “Defying Gravity.”
