Sitting in the crowd for an Idina Menzel concert, chances are good that you’re there because you want her to sing “Defying Gravity” or “Let It Go.” The first song is from the musical Wicked and the second is from the blockbuster Disney film, Frozen.
You’ll hear both songs, and you’ll be thoroughly entertained by one of the best singers of her generation. It should be noted, however, that despite her connection to Disney, Menzel’s live shows are for adults.
She’s going to sing adult songs with adult themes. Furthermore, while she’ll sing popular songs, most of her repertoire is from Broadway.
As well it should be. In the mid-1990s, she rose to national fame after playing Maureen in the hit Broadway musical, Rent.
Then, in 2003, Menzel originated the role of Elphaba, in a little musical called Wicked. In 2014, she returned to the Great White Way to play Elizabeth Vaughan in the musical If/Then.
All three performances earned Menzel a Tony nomination. She won the Tony for playing the green witch in Wicked.
Menzel also starred on the television show Glee and was married to actor Taye Diggs from 2003 to 2014.
